U.of Jordan(Amman) March 13

I'll be speaking to students in Dr. Rami Haddad's music class at the University of Jordan about jazz and blues on
Sunday March 13 at 10am. I'm looking forward to it-- it should be interesting to contrast  these American musical forms and local musical forms.

JJA 2010 Conference Jan 7-11

The Jazz Journalists Association's second annual conference, "New Media for New Jazz" will be held in New York City Jan 7-11. Check out the schedule at JJA News; the conference will include a series of panel discussions and town hall meetings to be held at the Sheraton NY– all free, though registration is required.

Charlie Haden bio doc NYC Nov 23

 Charlie Haden: Ramblin' Boy, a feature-length bio-doc about bassist Haden, has a New York City premiere at the New York Film Festival on Tuesday, November 23, at 7 pm at the Walter Reade Theater in Lincoln Center. Ramblin' Boy includes performances with Ornette Coleman and Keith Jarrett, among others, and  --oh yeah--  I'm a featured critic and commentator. 'Fats Waller' on the radio after Nov 18

 "Fats Waller: The Joint Is Jumpin,'" an hour-long radio program will be broadcast on many public radio affiliates nationwide starting Thursday, November 18  (through the Jazz Satellite Network/WFMT). I wrote the script, so I can tell you that Waller's hits including "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Honeysuckle Rose," "Your Feets Too Big" and "Handfull of Keys" are performed by entertainer Ben Vereen, singers Carla Cook and Alan Harris, guitarist Doug Wamble, pianist Ehud Asherie and an octet led by saxophonist Andy Farber; Wendell Pierce is host. Best Jazz of 2010 Sept 15 NYC

I'll be moderating an informal jukebox jury and panel discussion on the best jazz (so far!) of 2010. Sheila Anderson, Martin Johnson, David R. Adler and Kurt Gottschalk  will each bring several tracks for listening, blindfold-testing and freewheeling discussion. It's  a JAZZ MATTERS panel sponsored by the Jazz Journalists Association.
